About the book: One of the still unexplored aspects of the composer and instrumentalist Pixinguinha is that of a talented arranger. Between the decades of 1940 and 1950 he worked as musical director of the show called “O Pessoal da Velha-Guarda” (The Old-Timers), aired by the Tupy Radio Station and hosted by Almirante. The show used to focus on the rich musical scenario of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period in which the identity of the Brazilian popular music was built. In an atmosphere that eulogized past days, the show used to bring to listeners the arrangements made by Pixinguinha both for older compositions written by Chiquinha Gonzaga, Ernesto Nazareth, Mário Álvares and Paulino Sacramento, among others, and for contemporary authors, such as Jacob do Bandolim and Pixinguinha himself, where dialogues containing the typical sonority of that specific moment could be found, with rhythms as polkas, tangos, maxixes, waltzes, marches and schottisches nicely living together. The publication comes in a special box with 36 scores plus a book with texts prepared by the Project Organizer and Music Coordinator of Instituto Moreira Salles – ISM, Bia Paes Leme, Researcher Anna Paes, Violinist and Arranger Paulo Aragão and Mandolinist and Maestro Pedro Aragão. Two scores included in this special edition are from unpublished songs of the composer. Pixinguinha is one of the most important Brazilian musicians of all times.
